I've switched to Linux!
After lots of days seeing people switching to Linux, I started researching everything about it. Is it better? Is it necessary? What are Linux distros? and what is the best one?
bye-bye Windows
Basically, the main reason was Windows is too heavy. Sometimes I was doing literally nothing and the CPU% went up. That upset me. Windows is also too slow sometimes, especially when it starts up. It doesn't feel lightweight in general. Also, it seems Microsoft stores information about you and your PC, even screenshots! And if all of that wasn't enough, Windows implemented their shitty AI, Copilot (which will use my data).
I don't think Windows is a bad Operating System, but it's making its way to becoming one.
Linux distros
Now, I'm not afraid of switching to Linux (well, I lil bit maybe). But a lot of people are doing the same and I feel the community take care of it. Also, nowadays there are lots of distros to choose: from Windows-friendly ones such as Linux Mint to do-it-yourself distros like Arch Linux.
I considered some distros for me: Fedora, Arch Linux, CachyOS and Pop!_OS at some point. I discarded all the ones based on Debian, because I simply don't like Debian. I don't know why either, but it doesn't resonate with me. I did the same with Ubuntu due to the fact I use it at work. I wanted something different.
I was between Fedora and Arch. I watched lot of videos and read posts on Reddit. Fedora seems really good in general and I couldn't say something bad. Actually, It would be my alternative right now. Arch... well, Arch seems fun. I like the unlimited personalization and you literally control everything in your PC because you code it. The bad thing is: you code it :P I don't have the knowledge for that and I could've been days just to have an operating system running without errors. In the end, I can have the same with other distros, even better. And this is when CachyOS enters the room. CachyOS is Arch-based, but a lot more user-friendly. It's also focused on gaming. In the beginning, I didn't keep that kind of things in mind, but being honest, it's better for me. Apart from that, it's also very lightweight and has a high performance. You can do everything on the terminal so I can't ask for more.
I chose KDE Plasma as my Desktop environment. It's the most popular and after few days I'm really happy with it. Maybe, one day I'll try Hyprland for fun, but I can have the same things/personalization (even more?) with other environments, so there's no need for now.
final thoughts
I'm really happy with CachyOS (with Linux, in general). I want to hug it forever and never let it down. Open-source programs are a breath of fresh-air for the industry. I don't want to pay a license for everything (word, excel, powerpoint, even adobe acrobat!! just a PDF reader, Premiere, Lightroom...) If they weren't so expensive they could be nice, but it doesn't make sense.
It has (or may have) bad things, but the good ones outweigh the bad ones. Now I can update the system with one command. I don't have to wait after powering on the computer, my fans work at a normal rpm. Everything seems calm, fast and under control. No spam, no tracking. CachyOS feels good :)
I hope this Linux fever on the internet lasts for long.
